BUSINESS + COMMERCIAL CUSTOMERS – a selection of frequently asked questions...

• Do you charge to evaluate our needs?

Only if the evaluation involves serious network design or is at a remote location outside of the metropolitan area. Generally speaking, most new office fitouts or additions to existing infrastructure can be evaluated free of charge

• We are having all sorts of Internet problems and someone said our PABX or alarm system may be interfering with it. How do we know?

If your Internet is ADSL, there is a possibility that a telephone or security system or some other type of service like EFTPOS may be interfering with your Internet connection. We can easily assess this and install an inline or central ADSL filter if required

• We’d like to consolidate our servers and network equipment into one area – can you do this?

We can plan, design and quote server and network consolidations. We supply and install racks and air conditioning if required. Design fees may apply for these types of projects

• Do I need any special computer air con?

As  with air conditioning a home or office, air conditioners for server rooms need to be specifically selected to suit the conditions. Our air conditioning technician can plan and design a system to suit

• I’m worried about power spikes from ETSA – what should I be thinking about?

Spikes and “brown-outs” over time can cause a lot of damage to I.T. and telecommunication equipment. We can calculate your power requirements based on the equipment and recommend a suitable UPS (uninterruptable power supply)

• Do you provide documentation of completed work?

All of our Category5E, Category 6 and Fibre Optic installations include a Fluke Networks© PDF report of each connection and termination

• Can you tell us how good our data connection is?

Yes – we can evaluate any CAT5E, CAT6 or fibre optic connections utilising state of the art, Fluke testing equipment

• Why do we use Krone?

We believe ADC Krone© to be the best quality cable and connectors available for the small business right up to enterprise and telecommunications market

• Why should I consider fibre?

Fibre is best suited for links beyond 90m, when links require greater speed than 1Gigabit/sec or where temperature or electrical interference may be an issue (eg workshops or industrial sites)

• Why do we need CAT 6 over CAT 5?

The general difference between category 5e and category 6 is in the transmission performance, and the extension of the available bandwidth from 100 MHz for category 5e to 200 MHz for category 6. Because of its improved transmission performance and superior immunity from external interference, systems operating over category 6 cabling will have fewer errors vs. category 5e for current applications.

• If I was getting a new installation would I go CAT or fibre?

Fibre is best suited to main backbone cabling, say between buildings or different floors. Cat5E or Cat6 suits the individual runs from your servers out to individual workstations.

• You provide electrical wiring but does it extend to 3 phase  and industrial needs?

Yes – we can offer electrical work from a few power points right up to industrial phase 3 switching

• What kind of warranty do you provide?

All of your ADC Krone installations can be registered with Krone for a 15 year warranty provided the site and environment has allowed us to install to ADC Krone TrueNet specifications. All of our other cabling carries a 12 month warranty on cable and components (conditions apply)

• Can you help us transition from regular phone to IP telephony?

Absolutely – we offer Cisco IP telephony solutions from 8 users right up to 96 users

• What level of support, both in and out of hours do you offer?

If required, we can offer 24/7 support contracts

• Can you offer remote monitoring?

By purchasing certain hardware, and paying an on-going maintenance fee, we can monitor your equipment and set alerts if certain conditions or failures occur

• Will you keep us up to date with industry trends and provide direction for upgrades?

Yes – because we are an ADC Krone TrueNet Integrator, we are constantly being kept up to date with the latest trends and availability of new technology which can enhance and improve network performance

• How future-proof are your solutions?

All of our Cat6 and Fibre installations are design to take advantage of Gigabit Ethernet. Our fibre installations and Category 6A (augmented) can also scale up to 10Gigabit if required

• Do you have certification?

Yes – all of our installers are licensed ACMA cablers and are registered with A.C.R.S. All of our installers terminating and installing ADC Krone Warranty sites are certified by ADC Krone as “Master Installers”

• We have multiple sites – can you provide a company wide solution?

Yes – we can assist you with WAN solutions utilising VPN’s or even private networks over the public internet utilising services like Internode’s IBC (Internode Business Connect)

RESIDENTIAL CUSTOMERS – a selection of frequently asked questions...

• Why do I need an ADSL splitter?

An ADSL Splitter enables the ADSL signal to be separated onto it’s own pair of cables leaving your other cables in the house free of this signal for plain old telephone services (POTS). This can usually improve the performance of your ADSL and significantly reduce dropouts of the ADSL and also eliminate “buzz” or noise on your phone line

It is important to factor in your house design and any renovations that may have been done when asking us about ADSL Central Splitters. We will ask a few questions before we inspect your house, but we cannot always guarantee a simple installation

• Can I have a fax at home as well as a phone on the same line as the Internet?

Yes – we can advise the best way to do this using a combination of ADSL, Telstra duet service and an ADSL splitter

• What about my alarm that talks to the base?

Once again, these are another device using your phone line that can possibly interfere with your ADSL. We would recommend a central splitter

• How much do you cost?

Our casual rate is a $132.00 call out fee which includes the first hour of work. The hourly rate thereafter is $99.00. Central Splitters are $49.50 (all prices include GST)

• Do I pay for travel time?

Only if you are further than 25 kms from the CBD. We charge $66 per hour for travel with a minimum charge of $33.00

• We’ve just renovated – can you ensure the wiring end plates will match our design?

Yes – we can supply any faceplates from the Clipsal or HPM range

• Do you offer electrical repairs to our home?

Yes – it is not our core business, but are happy to quote especially if it is in conjunction with data or telecommunications work

• Would I need fibre at home?

Not unless you need large bandwidth in excess of 1Gigabit or have a distance greater than 100meters

• Do you provide home automation?

Not at this stage but we are evaluating the market needs. Certainly give us a call and let us know your requirements

• Over the last few years we’ve accumulated more iPods, computers, set-top boxes and TV’s that we don’t know what on what? Can you help us simplify it all?

No, but the guys at Mac Centre Norwood can sort all that out

• I get very a very poor TV signal on some channels – can you fix this?

We can assess an antenna connection with test equipment. Most often this is due to poor cabling from an antenna to the room, or an old antenna that has moved or degraded over time
